About WebAssign
This fall PHY 113 will be using WebAssign for submission and grading of homework.
You will still work out problems with paper and pencil, but answers will be submitted
online to the WebAssign website. One of the benefits of this system is that you
receive immediate feedback on whether or not you have completed the problem correctly.
Multiple submissions (usually 5) of each assignment are allowed, so if you initially
work out a problem incorrectly you have an opportunity to rework the problem correctly
and receive credit.
After each class meeting a new assignment will be posted in two places.
One is on WebAssign. The other is on the course
homepage.
Homework problems originate from the textbook. Note that WebAssign can
alter the numbers in individual problems from those appearing in the text.
This may occur, for example, if problems with answers already given in
the back of the book are assigned. You should, therefore, read all problems
on WebAssign carefully and write down the numbers for your particular problem.
Solutions to homework problems will be posted on the course
homepage after the assignment due date.
In order to benefit from your homework, you are required to write up
your problem solutions and to keep them in a notebook or binder with all
your work. You may be asked to hand in your homework binder for review
at anytime.
And remember, the honor code is to be maintained at all times. Submitting answers
on WebAssign for problems that you have not worked is cheating.
WebAssign Deadlines
1. The deadline for entering your registration number in WebAssign is
Saturday, September 9 at 11 am.. If you have not registered by that date
you will be locked out of WebAssign.
2. Assignment solutions must be submitted before 10:50
am on the due date. Following that you will prevented from submitting your
answers.
Logging on to WebAssign
WebAssign can be accessed on the internet at www.webassign.net.
When you go to the logon page you will be asked for a Username, Institution,
and Password. Your username is the same as your Wake Forest username. For
Institution, use wfu. For password, use your WFU Student ID number.
Even without logging in, you can access the Online Tutorial by clicking
the link labeled Guide at the top of the WebAssign home page.
Registering with WebAssign
The registration number that you received with your WebAssign student
access code card is needed to register yourself as an official WebAssign
user. For the first ten days (until September 9), you can use WebAssign
without registering; after that date you will be asked to provide your
registration number to continue using WebAssign. You will provide your
registration number by completing an assignment which only asks for the
number.
-
If you do not register with WebAssign before September 9, you
will be locked out of the system. To get back on, you must send an email
to Dr. Kerr with your name, ID#, WebAssign registration #, and an explanation
of why you failed to register as instructed. You will not receive any further
credit for homework until you are properly registered.
After logging on to WebAssign
After you have successfully logged onto WebAssign, you should see your
"Current Assignments" along with due date and time and the number of allowed
submissions.
Click on the assignment "WebAssign Use" and answer the questions. These
are questions based on the online tutorial about how to use WebAssign.
Remember, unless otherwise stated, WebAssign considers answers with one
percent accuracy to be correct. In general, this means entering 3 significant
figures. This is just a practice assignment to familiarize you with the
new system. After you have filled in all the boxes and/or clicked the necessary
buttons, you must click on the Submit button for your answers to be recorded.
This assignment will not effect your grade for the course; it is just for
practice.
Hints on submitting assignment answers (PLEASE
READ THIS CAREFULLY)
-
WebAssign is able to randomize some of the assignment questions. That is,
the data for a problem given by WebAssign MAY BE DIFFERENT from that given
in the problem in the textbook. Therefore you should look at the WebAssign
assignment before attempting the problems and make notes of the numbers
given there. If WebAssign has randomized the data in a question, it
will be shown in red on your screen. The data in your question will
remain the same for subsequent submissions. However, each student may have
a different set of data for which to solve the problem.
-
Remember, in general WebAssign looks for 1 percent accuracy (3 significant
figures). So work out the problem and then round off or truncate
the answer.
-
Each assignment has an OPEN date, for which the assignment can first be
viewed. This date usually corresponds to that for which the work is covered
in lectures and is usually two (or three, for weekends) days before the
due date..
-
You are given multiple submissions (usually 6) for each assignment. Following
the first input of answers, you will be told which you got right or wrong.
You can then correct the wrong answers and resubmit. You can log off and
come back later to resubmit your answers. If you do this, click on "Last
Submission" to see your right and wrong answers for the previous submission,
make corrections, and then RESUBMIT.
-
Answers to the WebAssign problems will be posted soon after the assignment
deadline, and you will not be able to make further submissions.
- The full solutions to each assignment will be posted on the PHY
113 web site soon after the assignment deadline. The posted solutions
are done with the numbers given in the book; these may differ from your personal
version of the problem obtained from WebAssign.

What to do if you have problems
If you cannot log onto WebAssign, there are a number of possible reasons.
You may have added the class recently and not be on the official WebAssign
roster, or there may be an error in the roster. If you are having difficulty
logging on, then e-mail Dr. Kerr. If
you are having other difficulties, then please check the PHY
113 webpage FIRST to see if Dr. Kerr is already aware of the problem
and the status of the resolution of the problem. Always provide the following
information in your email:
-
Your class and instructor
-
Your full name as it appears on your official University records
-
Your Student ID number
-
A detailed description of the problem you are having
-
Dr. Kerr will respond to your email with instructions on how to proceed
or direct you to the webpage for detailed instructions.

If you are able to logon on but go no further, the problem may be with
the setting of your web browser (Netsacape Navigator, or Microsoft Internet
Explorer). Make sure that the setting about "cookies" is set to "Accept
all cookies", or "Always accept cookies". (To do this in Navigator, click
Edit on your browser toolbar, select Preferences from the drop-down menu,
select Advanced from the dialog box that opens, then click the button to
