Backup, backup, backup
Things can go wrong. Computers, av, network, printing, servers, power, as well planned (except weather) as it could be, can still go down.
Have a BACKUP PLAN for class and conference
- copy to local server, make a CD/slide/transparency, printout speaker notes
- 10 min. early for (unpack, find cable etc.), give out handout, have a slide of URLs in LARGE font
During exchange
- Only c:\userdata will
be backuped and restored during upgrade by IS, no gurantee it will be successful
- software installed usually need to be reinstall, because some files goes outside
c:\userdata into system
Misc. tips
Additonal tips can be found at
Misc.
- change password, account lock out
- WIN entries
- travelling oversea
- insurance
- computer name/workgroup registration
- add a network printer
- create 1st web page, change user pref. - use update page on www.wfu.edu
- we don't support AOL (it may interfer with your computer's network settngs), 98/NT (you may not be able to access \\acfiles), Linux on your computer
consult ISSC instructions
WinIPcfg
If you are using the new 10/100 Ethernet card, you may need to to run this program and do a release all before you can connect to WFU resources through IGN.
You can also use it find out your machine's IP address when you need that number for things like X-windows
From the Start menu, choose Run
IGN dialer
You won't be able to access \\acfiles, \\acad1 resources through IGN dialer since you didn't login to our NT network. Here is a possible work around. IT IS A UNOFFICIAL PROCEDURE. IT HAS NOT BEEN FULLY TESTED, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!! If you just need to get to your web pages at home, it is easier just use FTP.
- use 95's dialer
- choose logon to network (everytime you use IGN dialer, it will reset back to no though)
- hard code the WINS numbers
- change the 2nd DNS to WFU server
- hardcode the DNS search path
mount network drive
e.g.
H: \\acfiles\homes
P: \\acad1\physics
Your web pages will be at H:\www-homes
keyaccess
telnet
The window size is incorrect is a bug. You need to resize it. It is fixed in NT/98 version.
If you see duplicate characters when you type, check the preference setting to make sure local echo is not on and the font size is not set to be too large.
Printing
UNIX vs PC vs Mac line return differences
- UNIX hex: 0A(LF)
- PC hex:OD(CR) + OA(LF)
- Mac hex: OD(CR)
ASCII vs PostScript printing
ac printing
- default unix text : lp -dolin305or junk.txt
- PostScript : lpr -P olin305or -l test.ps
NT printing
- You have to login!!! No black login box, no printing
- Make sure the printer is NOT off-line
Dept. printing
- Physics DEC default binary/PostScript :
UNIX text lp -d olin305_text (add printer_cr automatically) or use mpage
- Physics PowerPC
default binary/PostScript, UNIX text lp -d luna (lp -dolin305unix). Make sure printer is on line. Click on printer icon, if Out-of-Service, email sysadm to restart print queue
Good practice
- Please don't touch the computer screens
- Logout, shutdown when done
- left a paper note if work in progress/run jobs in background
- see screen lockout (UNIX), password protected screen saver (Windows) to NO
- delete files in \windows\temp every once a while, unsuccessful install interfer with future software setup
- set check mail interval setting to a reasonable time
- use multiple mail profile
- don't create your own workgroup
- Never hit cancel when there is virus alert, choose delete or clean

login - It is your Notes HTTP password, it should be the same as your ac/NT login password.
Notice the username is NOT the usual web login - ac/NT login name, which is first 4 digital of last name + middle initial + year of graduation.
