Q. Where is DS9 located?
A. According to the show,
the station is the Beta Quadrant of the galaxy and within Bajoran space.
The station was orginally orbiting Bajor, but is it was moved to a postion
near the mouth of the wormhole in the first episode, "Emissary".
Because it is located so far from the rest of the Federation, DS9 is often
on its own for Starfleet support.
Q. Why is the Bajoran Wormhole so
special?
A. It is the only known wormhole
with two stable endpoints. Other wormholes that have been seen in
the Star Trek universe have been either temporary or possessing only one
fixed endpoint. The aliens who live inside the wormhole are regarded
as deities by the Bajorans. They are called "the Prophets of the
Celestial Temple".
Q. What are the "Tears of
the Prophets"?
A. Also known as "Orbs",
these are objects which were sent to Bajor by the aliens who live in the
wormhole. There were nine Orbs on Bajor, and each possessed mysterious
powers. Eight Orbs were stolen by the Cardassians when they left
Bajor; only the "Orb of Prophecy" remained undiscovered. Two others-
the "Orb of Prophecy" and the "Orb of Time" were later recovered and returned.
Q. What are the Ferengi Rules
of Acquisition?
A. The Rules of Acquisition
are a set of proverbs around which Ferengi conduct their business dealings.
There are 285 of these Rules, and each male Ferengi is expected to know
each one- word for word- from childhood onwards. (Females are banned
from acquiring profit, so they are not permitted to learn the Rules for
personal gain.) They were originally conceived by Ira Steven Behr
during the first season, and have been followed up by various writers ever
since. Click here
for a complete list, compliments of Mike Brown (aka "Vidiot").
Q. What is the Dominion?
A. The Dominion is the ruling
body of the Gamma Quadrant. It is composed of three parts:
the Founders, Changelings who oversee all operations from their remote
homeworld; the Vor'tas, who function as the Founders' beauracracy and mediators;
and the Jem'Haddar, who are their soldiers. The Founders, long ago,
and been persecuted by other races in the Gamma Quadrant because of their
shape-changing abilities. Turning the tables on their aggressors,
they rule with an iron hand. The Vor'tas also serve as the controlling
force of the Jem'Haddar, by providing them with a drug known as "white"
which is their only form of food.
Q. How did Kira get pregnant?
A. In real life, Nana Visitor
and Alexander Siddig are romantically linked. When Visitor became
pregnant, it was incorporated into the show. While returning to DS9
in a damaged runabout, a pregnant Keiko was in danger of losing her baby.
Dr. Bashir transplanted the child into Kira, and she carried it to full
term. Vistor's baby was born in September 1996, and Kira's baby was
born near the end of DS9's fifth season (1997).
