I have good and bad news from Tom Sekine. The bad news is that (as
explained below) he doesn't have time to join OPE-L now. Part of the good
news is that he wants to join our list when he has more time:

> Dear Gerald Levy, Thank you for your kind invitation to join OPE-L. I
> also talked with Professor Makoto Itoh who is a long-time subscriber of
> yours and seems to be well acquainted with activities of your group.
> After some reflections, I have come to the conclusion that I would be
> most pleased to join you when I am definitely retired and have more time
> for myself. At this time, not only am I still active in full time
> teaching, but I am also overcommitted with activities of all sort and in
> all directions, so much so that my capacity of participating in, and
> benefitting from, discussions of your group will be extremely limited.
(snip)

The rest of the good news is the offer that he makes below to listmembers:

> This, of course, does not mean that I am uninterested in your
> activities. If you (or anyone else in your group) wish(es) to raise a
> specific issue with me and it is within my competence, I would be
> delighted to respond to your (his/her) communication provided that it
> is in less than 300 words at a time. It would be still better if you
> (he/she) write(s) to me, at 5-19-2 Nishiogikita, Suginamiku, Tokyo,
> Japan 167-0042, non-electronically and without expecting an
> instantaneous reply. I will certainly respond to such an overture in
> due course. Thanks and regrets, with all my best wishes to you. Tom
> Sekine

Well, I guess this is one of those cases where we have to take the bad
with the good news. Let me note, though, that if you are afraid of the
quantity of list mail then you have other options (e.g. you can receive
posts in "digest" version where you get one mega-post/week or you can read
the posts at our archives site:
http://ricardo.ecn.wfu.edu/~cottrell/ope/archive ).

In solidarity, Jerry

PS: Diane Elson told me last week that she would like to join OPE-L later
this year when she has more time. I was surprised to hear that she is
working in New York City now where she is Special Advisor to the Executive
Director, United Nations Development Fund for Women.
