Ian, I agree fully with what you say.  This causal role, or
role as a transmission belt, is implied in Marx's word
"darstellen".  Do you remember the dichotomy Marx makes
between the method of research, which takes in the multitude
of phenomena, and the method of representation, which
organizes these phenomena in such a way that one sees their
inner connection?  It is no accident that Marx uses the same
word "Darstellung" here.  The human researcher needs such a
representation of the world in order to be able to act on
the world.  In the same way the market is an agency which
acts on production, and again a representation is needed in
order to focus the impact which the multitude of market
interactions have on production.  Marx's concept of
representation very much implies causal activity and
"transmission belt".
