The technique behind...

...the MMEB concert images
June 30, 2001.

The first four images in this series were taken with the Nikon Coolpix 950 in the highest jpg-resolution, flash off.

The remaining 12 images were taken with the Nikkor AF-S 2.8/80-200 lens on my Nikon F5, in full automatic program mode with 3D Color Matrix Metering. This series demonstrates how accurate Nikon's innovative metering is. Spotlight, backlight, floodlight - the metering couples with the preferred autofocus segment to expose for the main subject. About the lens: most shots were taken with full open aperture! See how sharp the pictures are anyway.

The film used was Kodak Supra 800; it gave me exposure values ranging from 1/30 at f 2.8 up to 1/100 at f 4.5. It was scanned on the Imacon Photo at 5400 dpi. All images were color corrected, and some unsharp masking was required. This was my first attempt with this film, and I really like it. The only noticable negative effect of this high-speed film is the greenish grain in dark areas, which is quite visible in the larger images on this webpage. On the last image, the one of singer Noel McCalla with the red spotlight behind him, I elimiated this green noise by filling the background in with pure black.

PS: The 2002 pics were taken with my rangefinder Fujifilm TX-1 and a 90mm lens on Fujichrome Provia 400 film.
