What To Do if You Miss a Lab Without Prior Permission

If you miss a lab without prior permission it is unlikely that you will be given permission to make up the lab. However, there are a few reasonable circumstances where missing a lab is unavoidable.

Invalid reasons for missing lab:

Valid reasons for missing lab:

I overslept.

I was in the hospital emergency room.
I forgot.
I was in police custody.
I had to study for a test.
I had an auto accident while driving to lab.
I had to write a paper.
I had the flu.
I had an upset stomach.
I had a headache.
I was out of town.

If you do miss lab without prior permission and think that you have a valid reason for being absent:

  1. Leave me a brief phone message on my answering machine [(336) 758-4987] or send me a brief e-mail. Do this as soon as possible, preferably before or during the time your lab is meeting.
  2. Send me an e-mail with the time and date of the lab you missed and more detailed information about why you missed the lab. If you have a note from your doctor or documentation of your encounter with the police, let me know. I will require some kind of written proof of your reason for being absent.
  3. I will reply to your e-mail and either:
    1. Grant permission for you to make up the lab (conditional on receiving documentation of your reason for being absent).
    2. Ask for further information.
    3. Deny your request to make up the lab.

If you receive permission to make up a missed lab, then you need to follow the instructions for making up a missed lab.

NOTE: Your TA cannot grant you permission to make up a missed lab.
