Re Rakesh's [OPE-L:2981]:

You claim that I have not responded to the Greenhouse report which
says -- you claim -- that the port truckers "think of themselves
as proletarians".

My response: (a) I sincerely doubt whether Greenhouse reported that
the truck drivers view themselves as "proletarians" or that the truck
owners claimed that they are "proletarians"; (b) if capitalists
believe that they are "exploited" by other capitalists or if wage-
earners come to think of themselves as "slaves" or "serfs", this does
not mean that capitalists exploit other capitalists or that wage-
earners are the same as slaves or serfs. I.e. whether the truck
drivers are part of the working class or the petty-bourgeoisie is
not a question that can be resolved only by reference to the
self-perception of the truckers. Similarly, most workers in the
US would, I think, claim that they are NOT part of the working
class. That doesn't settle the question of their class membership,
does it?

In solidarity, Jerry
