The attached information about repression by police agains the Landless
Workers Movement in Brazil, last weak, may be of interest to the list
members. At least one of the workers has been killed and hundreds have been
arrested and later released, except 12 of them, who have been sent to
maximum security Carandiru Prison, in the State Sao Paulo. Two of them have
been indicted under the National Security Law. The Landless Movement made
marches of thousands of landless workers in most of the states of the
country to protest against the government's weak commitment to agrarian
reform. Analysts say this is today the largest and most effective worker
based opposition organization in the country.

ONE PERSON AND INJURING DOZENS IN PARANÁ STATE, BRAZIL

On May 2, close to 1,000 military police intercepted 50 buses carrying
roughly 2000 sem terra (landless laborers) on
highway BR 277 about three miles from Curitiba, the capital of southern
Paraná state. Before the landless had exited
the buses, police began throwing tear gas canisters, and firing rubber
bullets and some real bullets at them. One of the
landless, Antonio Tavares Pereira, 38, the father of five children, was
shot in the chest and later died. Another man was
seen by witnesses after having been shot in the head. He has not been
seen since, however. Other landless are
reported missing. Local human rights groups continue to investigate
their
whereabouts.

In addition to the death of Antonio Tavares Pereira, and the possible
disappearances, the results of the violent action
were at least 180 injured. Most of the injured did not receive
treatment at the local hospitals. One person received death treats by
the military police inside the hospital.
