The difference being that Apartheid ideology was more paternalistic (or
pragmatic?) in its religous justifications - the Dutch Reformed Church saw
blacks as the biblical hewers of wood and drawers of water, a conception
that has nothing to do with punishment for original sin but conveniently
explains low wages and poor living conditions (which, incidentally, have
not improved under the post-Apartheid regime).
