This same element was part of Jim Crow. The "hewers of wood and drawers of 
water" refers to the curse of Ham, the father of Canaan. Ham, Japheth, and 
Shem were the three sons of Noah. In the ideology of white supremacy, Ham 
is the father of blacks, Japheth is the father of whites, and Shem is the 
father of Semitic peoples. The parallels between South Africa and the 
Southern US are stunning. See the work of George Fredrickson (Stanford, 
Department of History) for an exceptional comparative history of the two 
countries.
