see George Frederickson's White Supremacy: A Comparative Study of AMerican and  
South African History. I must say that when I read this book tens year ago, I 
was unpersuaded by his attempt to analogize the conditions of African Americans 
to coloreds in South Africa. I guess I'll ask him about this at the conference 
being held today in his honor!
