Paul, not quite clear as to what is being requested--a book on the
doctine of materialism or a book on recent social struggles. As for
the latter, may I recommend that your comrade use a search engine to
look up the names of Peter Waterman and Rohini Hensman. Both have
steered clear of moralising humanism.
