The book mentioned by Ranganayakamma, The Culutural Revolution and Industrial Organization in China, a small book, was a milestone and model in the tradition of summing up experience in a way that shows another world as not only possible but damned exciting too! I haven't read it in a while either, but my guess is it remains authentically in the avant garde.

  Dear Jerry,
I received a reply to my letter from Bettleheim in March 1998. He himself signed the letter.
When we brought out the second edition of the Telugu version of his book 'China Since Mao' in 2003, we sent him a copy which it seems he did not receive.
We have been contacting his friends cum students like J.Sapir whose email address he gave to me.
  Sapir@alize.msh-paris.fr

  Bettelheim's postal address:
  Charles Bettelheim,
  59 Boulevard Arago,
  75013 PARIS (France)

A year and half ago we came to know through Prof. Paresh Chattopadhyaya, a Marxist economist and a friend of Bettelheim, that Bettelheim was not keeping good health but he was interested in continuing his political experiences etc. Bettelheim's former student (it seems), Bernard Chouvance also informed us a year ago that Bettelheim was not keeping good health.
We had asked a Telugu knowing French person (Bosse), who married to a Telugu woman (Deena Bosse) to call and find out the condition of Bettelheim. For some reason, he neither contacted Bettelheim nor informed us about it.
Through Bernard, we learnt that Bettelheim's wife Lucette died and he is alone and his daughter visits him occasionally.
I think one can contact "Centre D' Etudes Des Modes D' Industrialisation" where he retired as its Director, as far as I remember. It is in Paris.
Unfortunately, we do not know French and it seems Bettelheim may not be in a position to respond to phone calls.
We have been in correspondence since 1982 when we started to translate his book 'China since Mao'. Later we brought out the Telugu version of his book 'Cultural Revolution and Industrial Organisation in China' (now we are preparing the second edition).
With the help of a friend, we brought out the English versions of volumes 3 and 4 of his French book on Soviet Union. ('Class Struggles in the USSR' ) in 1994 and 95.
We will continue our efforts to contact him through others in France and let you know later.
  This is for your information.
I do not have any objection if you use this for other members of the OPEL if it does not matter.
  Ranganayakamma

    Hi Howard:

I haven't read anything new from CB in recent decades. From
what I can tell, from a brief google search, CB (born 1913)
is still alive, but I know no more details. Does anyone know
what his current condition is and where he is living?

    In solidarity, Jerry
