From: Rakesh Bhandari (bhandari@BERKELEY.EDU)
Date: Tue Oct 18 2005 - 11:48:32 EDT

I received these messages from two friends at UC
Berkeley--Ashok Bardhan (the outsourcing
specialist) and Saba Mahmood (the feminist
anthropologist of Islam)

Dear friends
I'm circulating an appeal for funds for victims
of the recent Kashmir earthquake on both sides of
the border. The need for relief remains acute and
funds are scarce this time. Please donate
generously and FORWARD THE APPEAL TO OTHERS.

Kashmir Earthquake Victims Relief

Appeal for Contributions

A devastating earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter Scale hit South Asia
on October 8, 2005 at 8:50 am local time. The epicenter was near
Muzzafarabad, 75 miles WNW of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir. Almost 40
aftershocks have been recorded since the event. In Pakistan more than 20,000
are feared dead.

The death toll in Kashmir Valley is over 600 and rising. Uri and Tangdhar
areas have been worst hit. No news has yet come from more than 12 remote
villages in Teetwal area. Over one hundred thousand people have lost their
homes.

India Relief and Education Fund (IREF) is appealing for donations to help
the victims of this tragedy. Please donate
generously. Write your checks to IREF and mail to

India Relief and Education Fund

P.O. Box 14360

Fremont, CA 94539

Alternatively, contributions can be made on-line at
http://iref.homestead.com. Please specify that the contribution is for
earthquake relief.

IREF is 501(c)3 non-profit organization and contributions to IREF are
deductible for tax purposes as allowed by the law.

Dear Friends,

A number of you asked if there is a good NGO that
is doing relief work in Pakistan right now
deserving of your support. I am forwarding this
info because I think this organization is doing
some of the best work right now in Pakistan.

I would appreciate it if CSAS can spread the
word. And if all of you can please circualte
this. Thank you.

Best,
