OK, Jurriaan. Unlike Paul C, I didn't recognize the sarcasm re
"commerce" in your earlier post. (This is a quite common problem
with Internet exchanges.)
 
(To save on a post:) Yep, you're right about the timeline for the
transition from a federation of soviet socialist republics to the USSR
in 1922. The implications of this change were felt later under Stalin
with the Russification campaign (Ivan Dzuba's _Internationalism or
Russification?_ is a good source on that - and helps, I think, to set
some of the historical context related to the independence movements
in the USSR and, ultimately, its dissolution).
