I insist, I am referring to the realm of taught. It is a fact that US Democrats doesn’t represent faithfully the progressive liberal ideology. But this has to do with the corruption of political institutions and parties.
I remember a lecture about US political history and the existence of a minor socialist party. How far or close to social-democracy, I’m not sure. But the point is that European social-democrats have their original counterpart in America.
About Dave Z’s concern, the fact that the most popular trends of socialism were linked to labour movements doesn’t mean that there were not other socialist ideals. Besides, this doesn’t say anything about the exhaustion or last out of the category of class in pots-industrial societies.
“Political mass movement” is not necessary the same as “labour movement”, particularly today with the plurality of subjectivities demanding recognition (women, homosexuals, indigenous, ecologists, etc).

Amongst social democrats within the US, there is still a distinction
between social democracy and liberalism, although they often
(especially during election years) form alliances and serve as a
sort of 'left wing' of the Democratic Party. Much of the union
leadership in the US used to have a distinct social democratic
tradition but that has largely changed since the mid-1980s.
Nowadays, it has a much smaller influence - mostly among academics
and intellectuals.
In solidarity, Jerry
