Mainstream economics disregards, just as Marxists do,the social function of ‘disequilibria prices’, i.e. their usefulness for revealing structural breakdowns which divert the productive apparatus from the satisfaction of real preferences. Most Marxist interpretations of crises are based on the assumption that planning can eliminate uncertainty, but in doing so most of you are willing to abolish consumers’ freedom of choice. I’m deeply sceptical about these alternatives which only can reduce welfare and civil liberties.

Alejandro:
It is an ironic time for you to be pointing to the alleged
insights of mainstream economists about pricing. How many of
them, using those tools of analysis, accurately predicted
the current disequilibrium? Mainstream analysts are justifiably
being held up for public scrutiny and ridicule: e.g. see
John Stewart's interview of Jim Cramer @ http://www.the dailyshow.com.
