Thanks to Paul Bullock and Makoto Itoh for comments.

However, might I say that I already referred to exactly this issue of
unemployment statistics in Japan at the very beginning of my OPE-L post of
27 July 2009, in which I tried to fathom the real meaning behind the figures
? See for yourself

According to Prof. Rick Wolff,

"One obvious response to crises would be to question the capitalist system
that produces and reproduces them. That leads logically to evaluating
alternative economic systems."

I am not sure of his loogic, but anyhow in fact the majority of people,
massaged by media propaganda, see no alternative to capitalism beyond
reforms within capitalism, and the leftist alternative policies are not
perceived as attractive by the majority of the old and the young.

So Rick Wolff misses the real problem by a mile, which is that (1) the Left
not only has made hardly any "political capital" out of the world economic
slump, but also (2) the Left does not reflect about this self-critically in
a constructive way but just repeats itself.

Perhaps the old Left must die first, before fresh ideas can be born.
