The question originally was about their value. If one is interested in their price, then rent and the laws of copyright are clearly relevant.

Hi Paul C:

No doubt, but if you want to understand the value of opera (or most forms
of music and many other artistic commoditities) you would be well-
advised to consider *rent* rather than just the costs of production.
