Jurriaan, it would be interesting to hear more specifically what you
think is problematic about the Althusserian theories?

Personally, I have found some of it quite interesting and useful in the
philosophical sense of posing many conceptual issues in a better way
(with all the limits that it implies). In particular the effects it had
on the work by scholars like G�ran Therborn on the state and ideology
and Chris Wickham on pre-capitalist modes of production.
