>From what I know of chinese visiting the UK or those who I have met who have visited the US, I think it probably is a genuine expression of opinion. We may feel that ‘socialism with Chinese characteristics’ looks awfully like capitalism, but they take it seriously and seem really to be shocked by what they observe in the US.

If this is the author's honest view, it's incredibly naïve. All militaries are there to be used.

It's already been used against innocent civilians at home - so they'll be 'nice' to everyone else?

Here's an easy forecast - Chinese militarism will grow, and will become a major issue in international affairs.

Here's another - most of the Western left will be unprepared - they've been myopically focusing on 'neo-liberalism' instead.
