 The problem with the Lydian coins being standardised weights of gold
was that they were not, they were made of  electrum, a gold silver alloy.

If they passed as pure weights of gold then anyone accepting them as
bullion was cheated. It should be recalled that this was pre-Archimedes
so the technique to check the composition of gold silver alloys
was as yet unknown.

This was pointed out in by Bolin back in 1958.
