Resume

Objectives

To investigate new emerging technologies and to be a key leader in IT strategic planning.  To help establish business practices that will stabilize, protect and increase reliability of servers in a networked environment.

Work Experience

  • Systems Administrator, Sr.
    • 7/2004 - Present
    • Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC
      • Because of the increase use of Mac on campus, I have started to familiarize myself with the operating system.  Working with team members I have helped identify several issues that will need addressing if IS is to support these computers.  Two issues are Windows file share permissions and printer cost accounting.  Solutions have been found and I will be testing as soon as a formal project is initiated.
      • Another upgrade to Lenel (campus security application).  This time to create a more secure file transfer between Lenel, our security environment and Banner our student / employee record database, I investigated and implemented a new SFTP (secure file transfer protocol) using Putty.
      • Seeing the future of video as a teaching tool, I helped implement our Show and Share environment.  This set of servers can be used to record classroom material, which in turn can be viewed by our students at the time of their choosing.
      • To help domain communications for file / print shares and domain logins at a remote site, I worked with another campus IT department to build a RODC (read only domain controller).
      • As a public relations exercise, working with others I implemented a live stream camera. The images of which can be seen on http://webcam.wfu.edu.
      • To help WFU achieve better work flow and application standardization, I worked with a team to implement both Novatime (time card system) and EMS (room reservation services).
      • Wanting to upgrade Lenel, our campus security system to the latest version, I worked with the department that manages this system to not only upgrade the environment to the latest version, but to achieve better uptime, added a fail over function with the use of NEC Clustering.
      • Working with our medical school's IT department I implemented ADFS (Active Directory Federated Service).  With this application in place our IT department was able to control access to applications located at the MedCenter's remote domain.
      • Seeing the need for a person to build and manage MSSQL, I took it on myself to learn the database environment.  In taking on this task I build our first consolidated MSSQL environment which included mirroring and a witness server.
  • Systems Administrator
    • 8/1996 - 7/2004
    • Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC
      • As the first Windows Administrator, I was charged with setting up and maintaining the initial Windows environment.  This included many primary services;  Domain Controllers, WINS, DNS, DHCP, Print, File and Web servers.  I also setup several departmental servers such as a RealAudio server for streaming video, a Lenel security server for monitoring building access, a MSSQL server in support of the PeopleSoft environment I built and a Lotus Domino server which at one time we used for our email services and is still used as the database server for our campus budget application.
      • In support of PeopleSoft, I setup both a Windows Terminal server and a Citrix Metaframe server.  This allowed access to PeopleSoft by users who did not have the PeopleSoft client installed.
      • Over saw a development team in building the first standard image after our pilot project.  On IBM pre-production notebook computers I created the first standard computer image, which basic layout is still being used today.  I setup a standard file environment that helped with the migration of user data to a new computer if a replace computer was need.  I then created a assembly line process that allowed me to backup user data from an old computer, place a standard image on to a new computer and then copy the backed up user data to that new computer.
      • Working alongside IS management I was asked to investigate the processes and procedures used by other companies to help in the setup of our in-house Service Desk and computer distribution process.  This investigation included traveling to vendor sites across the eastern United States and examining their processes used in the replication of computer images and how they communicate support to end users.
  • PC Lab Manager
    • 8/1995 - 8/1996
    • Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC
      • Charged with the maintenance of five PC Lab's.  Through the use of disk imaging software, I was able to remotely refresh the software on those lab computers making them more reliable.  To help achieve this, I setup an NT 3.51 server that contained the images along with the software to control licensing.
  • Micro-Computer Sales
    • 8/1994 - 8/1995
    • Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC
      • Worked closely with upper management and our business partner IBM to start Wake’s move towards a standard hardware platform.  Participated in the initial design and implementation of the pilot image placed on the hardware we chose.
      • Acted as a sales consultant to faculty, staff and students.  Worked with end users to research their computer needs, then recommended hardware, software and networking components.
