In saying that a commodity embodies labor or represents congealed
labor, Marx is merely reminding people who have come to understand
social relations as primarily buying and selling commodity relations
that in exchanging what may appear as simple inanimate objects they
are actually engaged in social labor relations mediated by those
things. It's not that Marx had a metaphysical belief in value as a
kind of ghost in the thing. People, including Left Hegelians and
other critical critics and even Marx himself, are forced to impute
ghosts into things--value--because social relations are mediated by
those things.
